About the Chasen

How to properly prepare your chasen (matcha whisk) before first use
Before using your chasen for the first time, you should "untangle" it so that the fine bamboo bristles loosen and the whisk can swing freely when whisked. This creates a creamy, fine-pored matcha foam.
1. Pour warm water into a bowl:
Fill a matcha bowl or cup with warm (not boiling) water, around 70–80°C is ideal.
2. Soak chasen for 10–15 minutes:
Place the chasen completely in the water with the bristles facing down (the handle stays dry). Let it steep for at least 10 minutes, or up to 15.
3. Bristles come loose:
When soaked, the bristles become softer, open slightly and take on their typical curved shape.
4. Shake gently:
Remove the chasen from the water and shake it lightly over the bowl. Then you can start preparing your matcha right away.

How to care for your Chasen properly
To keep your bamboo whisk beautiful for a long time and produce perfect matcha:
Before preparation
Soak briefly in warm water:
Immerse the bristles of your Chasen in warm water at approximately 70–80°C for 1–2 minutes.
→ This makes the bamboo soft and flexible and does not break when struck.
Bristles unfold:
Soaking helps the chasen to retain its natural curved shape → for extra creamy foam.
After preparation
Clean with water only:
Rinse the chasen with warm water immediately after use. Do not use detergent, which dries out the bamboo and can leave residue.
Shake gently:
Carefully remove excess water without bending the bristles.
Let it dry properly:
Place the chasen with the bristles facing upwards or on a chasen holder (kusenaoshi) → this way it dries evenly and retains its shape.
Store in a well-ventilated place:
Store it in a dry, well-ventilated place. Do not store in closed containers, as this may lead to mold.
